Just as we lock our front door at home! I was volunteering in my baby’s kindergarten classroom yesterday and I was visibly shaken by the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary school. I would like it to be common practice across the nation to lock our schools doors. My heart aches.

This story makes some interesting points that we can all apply to our lives when seeking personal development. Of all the Parables that Jesus taught this one I have learned the most. Jesus acknowledged the unfairness of life. We are all given a different starting point. Some of us are born with a “silver spoon” per se, others are born into poverty. What matters is not what we are given- it’s what we do with it that matters.

Here’s the story:
“Therefore stay alert, because you do not know the day of the hour. For it is like a man going on a journey who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave 5 talents, to another 2, and to another 1, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The one who had received 5 talents went off right away and put his money to work and gained 5 more. In the same way, the one who received 2 talents, gained 2 more. But the one who received 1 talent went out and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money in it. After a long time the master came and settled his accounts with them. The one who received 5 talents came and brought 5 more, saying, ‘Sir you entrusted me with 5 talents. See I have gained 5 more.’ His master answered “Well done my good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy with your master.” The one with the 2 talents also came and said “Sir you entrusted 2 talents to me. See I have gained 2 more. His master answered “Well done good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many. Enter into the joy with your master.” Then the one who had received 1 talent came and said “Sir I knew that you were a hard man, harvesting where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. See, have what is yours. But his master answered “You wicked and lazy servant! Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and I would have received my money back with interest!” Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten. For everyone who has, much will be given, and he will have an abundance. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.” Matthew 25: 13-30

A few key points I would like to point out is since we are all given different starting points in life, it is imperative to use our resources and remain humble. If you have been blessed with “5″ talents to start, don’t pat yourself on the back. You should expect more from yourself. If you happen to have started with “1″ talent what is important is you remain “faithful” with what you have been given. The master praises them for being “faithful” Praise is given for their “faith” not their results. If you have only “1″ talent and you are too “afraid” to do anything with it, it will whither by the wayside. Weather we are given 5 or 1 talents, we must make the most out of it to continue to reap abundantly.

The servants in this story are not working to create increase for themselves, it’s not even their money they are working with. Their true reward is to share in their master’s happiness. I know that if I do something to create increase for myself only, it usually does not create happiness. If I field my energy into helping others, I create the most increase both in joy and abundance. For to whom much is given, much will be required.

The last part is fear. Fear is what hold most people in bondage today. Fear of the unknown. “What if I fail, what if I don’t get the job, what if I lose money, what if blah blah blah” If you do what makes you happy and follow your heart, you will continue to increase. Do not live in fear. You see the servant that was “afraid” did not prosper because he was fearful of the unknown, instead of being fruitful and multiplying. Do not be lazy! Everyday use your resources, what you have been given and help others. Follow your dreams, remain faithful in all your work, and come share in God’s abundance!

I remember when my dad taught me to drive and he said “Drive defensively, drive like EVERYONE else is an IDIOT!” That was before cell phones and texting were so popular. Recently we had a tragic loss in the family, not due to texting and driving but it was a car accident involving teens and it was so hard to cope. I read about the youngest victim that survived being a 4 month old baby. I read a blog that questioned the parents that would bring a child that young to a midnight movie. I didn’t cast judgement, I’ve taken my baby to the movies before just not at midnight. That evening while watching Piers Morgan I watched as the “Family escapes shooting alive” spoke. Jamie Rohrs explained how he “lost” his son and was able to flee the theatre unharmed. It bothered me how he was explaining this, and felt as if he was trying cry during his explanation. I went to sleep bothered.

The next morning, Saturday July 21st I was reading the news and blogs as usual. I was relieved that I wasn’t the only one bothered! My bothered mood turned to lividness as I can’t imagine a man, a father leaving his family for dead in a life or death situation. The Sky Rider Foundation loves children and this really hit me hard! Most importantly what it all boils down to is that the kids are safe. All thanks to this young man named Jarell Brooks. When I found out what he did my first reaction was to bless him. Jarell was sitting next to Patricia Legarreta when she yelled “my kids” Jarell got them to safety. Jarell was shot in the thigh. Jarell did what a man, father, is suppose to do and he did it out of instinct. He didn’t leave and escape unharmed when a woman and children were in need. This made me cry and I tear up when I talk about it, even now as I’m writing this. Jarell Brooks didn’t do this for any money, it’s what you do when no one is looking that defines the real soul of a man. His act of heroism is to be recognized! God bless all the victims and families of this senseless tragedy. It’s in times of tragedy that we can all come together as one.

I also learned that Jarell Brooks graduated high school in May 2012 and he was working through the summer. He is eager to begin college this fall! What a fine young man his mother Eirz Scott, and father Jeffery Brooks raised. It all begins at home, we can all begin our charity, starting with our own children.

Life moves so fast, its good to have memories like these. I’m not sure what happened to the sound though. Remember back in the day it was the big VHS camcorder, then the smaller VHS-C, then came the mini DV cameras, now everything is digital? In the era of YouTube and social media, it’s nice to upload stuff instead of one day having to sift through old boxes (VHS) or old hard drives. Here’s a look at us after we had returned from the dentist and had our teeth whitened. I recall it was a hot summer day, Isaiah IV was about 2 months old. (Rockin his Lakers gear because it was playoff season) Enjoy…(for some reason audio is workin on mobile devices but not my desktop)
